Course Description
Successful completion of this course will provide participants with the skills, knowledge, and most importantly, confidence, to provide first aid treatment to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury, such as asthma or anaphylaxis. This course set applies to all workers or members of the community who may be required to provide first aid in the event of an asthma and/or anaphylaxis emergency in a community and/or workplace setting.

Satisfactorily completing all the requirements of this course set provides the student with the ability to develop risk management and risk minimisation strategies for individuals diagnosed at risk of asthma and/or anaphylaxis in the workplace. This includes the development and implementation of pre-emergency risk assessment/management and the development and implementation of individual asthma and/or anaphylaxis management plans.

This course provides nationally recognised training for workers, or nominated workplace first aiders, from any industry sector and addresses the provision of care to adults and/or children in the workplace who are diagnosed as being at risk of asthma and/or anaphylaxis or displaying signs/symptoms of asthma and/or anaphylaxis.

Course Delivery
This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Entry Requirements
An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

• An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).

• As a minimum, entrants to the course must have literacy and numeracy competencies equivalent to the Australian Core Skills Framework Level 3. An example of an ACSF Level 3 competency is being able to read and comprehend the ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis, use and respond to communication techniques to request appropriate emergency assistance at the scene of a First Aid incident and use writing skills to complete incident reports.

• Physical fitness to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills.

• To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:

  • Learning: Follow step-by-step instructions and ask for help when I need more information.

  • Reading: Read and understand simple health instructions, signs, and emergency plans.

  • Writing: Fill out basic forms and write down key details about an incident or situation.

  • Oral communication: Listen carefully and speak clearly when giving or receiving important information.

  • Numeracy: Use simple numbers to check times, doses, or read labels in an emergency setting.

  • Digital Literacy: Use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources.

Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required.

The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.

Delivery mode: Online with face-to-face: The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 3 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions.

Assessment Requirements

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Assessment Activities

Practical demonstrations:

• Infant - Administer asthma medication using a mask and spacer

• Child - Administer asthma medication (with a spacer) using a Personal Asthma Action Plan

• Adult - Administer asthma medication (without a spacer), using the Asthma First Aid Protocol developed by NACA

• Administer an adrenaline autoinjector for anaphylaxis

• Provide first aid for an allergic reaction

Case studies:

• Case Study 1: Risk Assessment & Emergency Management Strategy (for an individual with asthma-like signs and symptoms, with no previous diagnosis)

• Case Study 2: Risk Assessment & Emergency Management Strategy (for an individual diagnosed with asthma and anaphylaxis)

Documentation:

• Complete a First aid/Incident report form

• Complete a Risk Assessment

• Complete an Individual Management Plan, which includes a Communication Plan

Theory assessment:

• A written exam consisting of multiple-choice questions

Students are required to complete a self evaluation against the following core skills as part of the enrolment process. This will allow your trainer to understand any additional support that may be required during the course delivery and assessment.
